![]() Ardu, at first glance, is a huge sprawling jungle world. A quick scan of the world would show it teeming with life. It's a huge hot, sticky, jungle, with a heavy gravity and near constant rain. This planet was previously home to a race of highly advanced avians, who disappeared due to unknown reason. The Avian species was known for having a huge sphere of influence surrounding genetics and cloning, so many nations' scientists have interest in exploring what is left. What is left of life on the planet is primitive, and highly aggressive. But the rewards have been deemed worthwhile due to a great deal of of scientists and scavengers. The huge lure of this planet lies in the advanced tech deep in the jungles. An armed escort is almost always necessary. Despite having no foreign influence, this planet is highly dangerous. Many of this planet's creatures are extremely deadly, and the dormant defensive security forces are another threat entirely. Some looters and mercenaries also pick through the planet, forming their own issues. Possible rewards: Civilizations who explore here have a chance of finding technology boosts to Genetics, Cloning, Advanced AI, Wormhole technology, and rare metals. |

High Orbit HMS Venture Overlooking the planet through one of the available feeds, Corporal Francis Mkombe watched with a couple of the other lads as the sprawling mass of jungle grew in size as the Venture closed in. Jungle terrain wasn't exactly unfamiliar to him - he'd done his share of drops and training exercises on both Sanctuary and Darwin, but the bands of tropic and swampland on both worlds were easily dwarved by the continent-spanning rainforests seen here. Not to mention, the wildlife on either of the two planets under their borders wasn't nearly as terrifying as it was here, when it came to biting the bullet. Which led to the real reason as to why they were here - as reinforcements. A platoon of their fellow ODRs and a unit of SRs had hit the surface a few weeks back to set up camp somewhere in that mess of alien biology, followed a week later by a unit of the Engineer Corps to give their haphazard jungle outpost a greater degree of permanence. That had just been the start of it. Aboard the Venture came yet another platoon of ODRs, Mkombe himself included among their number, along with a further detachment from the Engineers and their RAEC counterparts - and that didn't even entirely account for the logistics personnel involved, or the representatives of the DIST. 'Why the Venture?' some might have asked, given that hauling a navy frigate into the fray of it all might've seemed a little overkill, but it was obvious to him - projection of force. Ardu didn't fall under any single jurisdiction beyond a mess of mercenary compounds and pirate strongholds scattered across the tangled surface - sending in a few lightly armed shuttles and a research vessel to this place always posed the risk of inviting trouble. In contrast, whilst the Venture was no cruiser or destroyer, between her and the other two vessels that made up the 3rd Reconaissance Fleet, corvettes Nelson and Stirling, they had the capacity to ferry the resource and personnel for the expedition without drawing too much attention (or strength) from the borders of the Commonwealth. In short, things were far better than they could've been. After what felt like another couple hours' worth of prep (though in truth it barely spanned an hour) and watching the crewmen shuttle about their duties, their Platoon Sergeant Caine's harsh Darwinian accent shouted them to attention and quickly directed them towards a pair of waiting Chetco VTOLs in the hangar bay, already loaded up with an assortment of equipment and supplies. "Charlie onboard with me, Delta adjacent." Delta was Mkombe's section - and that was his cue. Chanelling his inner-NCO, he gave a hasty response and started directing those men who followed up. "Aye, Sergeant - you heard the man! Climb on and belt up!" Not two minutes later and the crewmen were already finishing up their pre-departure checks as klaxons sounded off in the background. In another few minutes they'd be dropping out of the airlock and into the tangle below, the craft rumbling away as it hit atmosphere. Still, Mkombe couldn't complain - as far as drops went, this was a solid eight and a half out of ten. Ardu Northern Continent, Camp David When the military might of the Commonwealth wanted to get results, it proved itself fully well capable. Camp David was situated in the heart of the Northern Continent, where thick stretches of rainforest spanned for hundreds or even thousands of miles in either direction. A (relatively) small clearing had been expanded by a team of Engineers to make way for a landing strip and trees and other obstructions had been uprooted here or there to make room for the equipment here, but for the most part it retained its covering of rainforest which did a reasonably decent job at concealing it from would-be voyeurs. A defensive perimeter had been established with routine patrol shifts to watch for any sign of intruding wildlife or opportunist third parties, but David's (intentionally chosen) place in an elevated position offered them a natural advantage, too. Security had been taken seriously here. And with good reason, too - Camp David served not only as a foothold for the Commonwealth's forces on Ardu, but as a base from which to stage an expedition to the ancient remnants of civilisation on this world, where technologies once forgotten potentially laid within reach. Ardu Northern Continent ![]() The sound of the jungle was deafening. The constant noise of the local animal life could keep most soldiers up all night. Normal patrols were treacherous, however, the northern continent was littered with temples and metropolitan areas of the long forgotten race. The largest of which lie several kilometers just south of Camp David. It was massive, the size of New York City in the 21st century. It was built around a massive mountain, and the city spiraled around it. The jungle had began to take it over, with all kinds of poisonous monsters calling the old city home. |

Ardu Northern Continent Distinct from the ambient soundscape of the jungle were the low rumbles of a small convoy of lightly armoured vehicles, best suited to terrain such as this. Crew gunners carefully watched the surrounding biosphere for any signs of hostility, ready to open fire at a moment's notice, whilst squadrons of ODR and SR troops sat impatiently for what would soon be a ground-level deployment. At the heart of the convoy were the earlier mentioned figures from DIST - the Darwin Institute of Science and Technology - some of whom were eagerly studying the surrounding environment from the relatively safe confines of their transports. Indeed, some of them had seen the ruins of other civilised worlds, the blasted remains of Talarin being a chief example, but it was always something to behold in a place like this, where life clearly flourished despite the decay. With time, perhaps, there would be an opportunity to delve into the ancient culture and society of the long-dead peoples which built this place. For now, however, there was an ulterior motive to this. All ground personnel for this mission were wearing hazardous environment suits. After all, the atmosphere might have been breathable and the temperatures bearable, but that wasn't to say they weren't at risk of exposing themselves to something toxic or poisonous out here. Quarantine had to be followed, even if it might have been tempting to remove one's helmet and take in a breath of fresh air. "We're approaching the target site." One of the lead vehicles in the convoy announced, the vast spires of the temple and mountains looming overhead. With a steady climb, they'd soon be within reach of making entry. |
